Survivor and Victim Assistance
|
The Government of Jordan estimates the actual number of landmine victims is around 700 but could be as high as 800 victims.
NCDR, as the umbrella organization for mine action in Jordan, is keen on maintaining close relationships with all victim assistance operators in the country. It holds regular meetings with those partners to discuss coordination and cooperation amongst them with a view to preventing duplication of efforts, identify good practice in the field of victim assistance for mine action agencies and programs, identify lessons learned that will lead to the clarification of the respective roles and responsibilities of agencies involved in mine action, in relation to victim assistance, as well as formulate strategies and set priorities for action based on the actual needs of the victims.
The NCDR is also very active in soliciting funds for programs to be executed by its local partners. For example, it played a key role in ensuring adequate funding for the National Center for Amputee Rehabilitation that opened this year. NCDR also solicited funding for the purchase of equipment and vehicles that will facilitate victim rehabilitation at the Hashemite Charitable Society for Soldiers with Special Needs.
Additionally, NCDR has a very close cooperative relationship with LSN Jordan and the Jordan Red Crescent, with whom it meets regularly.
Meanwhile, the SVA Department has been collecting data on Jordanian victims from its local partners, including the RMC, REC, LSN, HSSSN, and the JRC, and is making contact with the victims to verify that data in order to establish an accurate, up-to-date and centralized database of information.
The SVA department visited several mine affected areas throughout the country and met with landmine survivors to assess their needs and determine ways to better serve them. |
